More than 200 senior citizens across the Pee Dee received surprise Easter baskets filled with goodies from employees of MPD Electric Cooperative. MPD’s “Power to Serve” charity donated funds to help fill the baskets and spread generosity to the seniors.
“They are going to love them,” said Linda Johnson, Executive Director of the Senior Citizen Association in Florence County. “So many times this group is overlooked, and they’re just thrilled to have the interaction with someone who cares.”
Each basket was filled with snacks, candy, hand soap and lotion, gripper socks and other necessary toiletry items. MPD employees volunteered to drive throughout the week to Florence, Darlington, Dillon and Marlboro counties to hand deliver baskets to the county’s senior care facilities.
“Our employees couldn’t wait to pass them out,” said Matt Haynie, Chief Marketing Officer of MPD Electric Cooperative. “Whenever we put together an event like this, I’m overwhelmed at the donations and participation from MPD employees. We know it’s important to give back to the communities we serve throughout the year.”
The baskets were made possible by MPD’s Power to Serve initiative, a charity founded to give back in the areas MPD Electric serves through donations and service projects. Along with company and employee donations, MPD’s Power to Serve hosts an annual charity golf event to help fund efforts. This year’s tournament is scheduled May 31st at the Country Club of South Carolina.
MPD was formed in 2020 through the merger of Marlboro Electric Cooperative and Pee Dee Electric Cooperative with the goal of creating joint economic benefits, long-term efficiencies and overall improved service for members residing in Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Lee, Marion, and Marlboro Counties. MPD has numerous for-profit subsidiaries including a very large commercial and industrial real estate firm known as Marlboro Development Team (“MDT”) and oil company, MPD Energy.
